On Friday 2nd November 2018, 50 members and guests came together at west Hove Golf Club to celebrate the society's 75 years of existence. The Society started in 1943 as the Hovians and two years later renamed to the West Hovians and in 1947 became the Downlands Golf Society. During these past years many of our older members were members like Frank Shannon, Bernard Barker, Michael Hunt (still a member and playing), John Saward and too may others to name but each fondly remembered. Many of them still supporters but unable to play. On the night a toast was given to one of our most loyal supporters, Ken Dowling who was a member for 58 years who sadly passed away recently.
A superb dinner was provided by Clay and his staff supported by an Irish four piece musical band which had everyone tapping their feet and some brave dancers doing the Irish jig on the dance floor. The raffle raised £00's and the star prize won by Jackie and Terry Pinker our long serving dedicated secretary (see photo). It was on this night that the annual prize giving was made and trophies presented along with prize vouchers to spend in the Pro shop. The 2018 Champion being our very own Secretary Terry Pinker playing off a handicap of 5 so a truly deserving winner (see photo).
The Downlands Golf Society stops meeting at the end of October and recommences in March 2019. If you would like to join, simply speak to Terry Pinker, Mike Whitty, Phil Harris or Norman Milburn and they will provide all the details. The Society meet on Thursday afternoons only and depending on the time of year complete either 13 or 15 holes of golf competitions. There are the normal medals and stableford competitions plus Knockout competitions closing the year with the annual prize presentation to the winners. Each year there is a £100 prize for the most stableford points for the best 6 competitions of 10, donated by the President.
We have enjoyed another great year towards our centenary and now the new President, Lee Bonnaldi is ready to step into the shoes of Tony Peters who has completed his year and we wish Lee a happy and enjoyable year as the new Downlands Golf Society President.
